What's Happening with Family Hiking Weekend?
Family Hiking Weekend is over for 2008, but there's still a lot happening at Meany between now next summer. Hiking Weekend is always the first weekend in August, and scheduled for August 1 and 2, 2009.
We will update this page whenever there is new information about Meany Lodge, Family Hiking Weekend, or general information concerning family hikes and outings.
Cheers

A Harriman (the sled dog) Update

Doreen Johnston sent an update on Harriman. I want to share it with all of you. It's all good news!
Hi everyone
Well, I am happy to report that Harriman's foot is just about completely healed! He has gotten quite spoiled throughout this whole ordeal. He went to work with me for 4 weeks as that was the only way I could be sure he stayed quiet. The vet that was on duty that day really did an awesome job of putting him back together. We are going over to Camp K this weekend and we are actually going to let him run in the team for the 1st time since the accident (with booties on, of course).
Happy trials!
Michael and Doreen

Family Camping at the Irish property
The Tacoma Branch is offering family car camping at the Mountaineers' Irish Cabin property along the Carbon River (located 1/2 mile outside the Mt Rainier National Park entrance). The old cabin is long gone, but it's a wonderful spot for group car camping with opportunities for various fun activities in the area.
Call Dale & Angela McKee at 253-460-0727 for more information. Sign-up through the clubs online activity search (seach under Committee/Family Activities under the pull down menus) or by calling the club house at (206) 284-8484.

Harriman the sled dog
Michael Johnston sent me an e-mail update on Harriman (the dog injured at hiking weekend). I want to share it with all of you. Thank you to Debra and Patti for your animal first aid.
Hi everyone
Harriman is doing pretty well, and has been a very good patient. The night was long at the emergency vet (we got home at 1:00 am). He tore about 3/4 of his big pad off on his hind foot but the vet was able to sew him all back together with some quite extensive stitches. The next several weeks will tell us whether it will work or not. I guess the pad is a difficult area to heal back together because of the nature of the tissue (fatty). He needs to remain quiet for the next three weeks. Not an easy task as he loves to run. We are doing our best.
He is going to come to work with me every day so I can be sure he doesn't disturb the bandage. I have a good feeling about it and we are doing the best we can to help him heal and the rest. Worse case scenario is he would loose that pad and it would re-grow. That takes 6 months or so, and he would not be able to run this winter. That would not be good for him as running is his life. Please think good thoughts/prayers for him and we will hope for the best.
Please thank everyone who helped during our emergency. It was greatly appreciated! We were very disappointed though that we couldn't finish out the weekend with all of you.
Thanks again and take care!
I will give Harriman a big hug from all of you :-)

Sign-up with Brown Paper Tikets
We have changed the sign-up this year. We are using a service called Brown Paper Tickets instead of the Club's online activity search. We used the service this past winter for Winter Sports Program sign-up. The service is easy to use and eliminates some past problems registering the little ones for the weekend.
The cost for hiking weekend is $40.00 ($41.99 w/service fee) for adults (age 14+), $20.00 ($21.49 w/service fee) for children (age 6-13), and the little ones 5 and under are free.

Dog sledding demonstration
Michael and Doreen Johnston will bring their sled dogs to Meany again this year. Saturday, August 2, they plan a special afternoon/evening program. In the afternoon after Saturday's hike, they will put the team to work and demonstrate summer pulling. After dinner, they will give a presentation in the lodge about dog sledding.

Operation Lifesaver program
David Agee from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway will come to Meany Lodge for Family Hiking Weekend to talk to the children and to the adults about railroad crossing safety. Operation Lifesaver is a nationwide, non-profit public information program dedicated to reducing collisions, injuries and fatalities at highway-rail crossings and on railroad railroad rights of ways. This is an important subject at Meany with our at-grade railroad crossing.

New web pages
Sojin and I are busy working with volunteers and hike leaders to make Family Hiking Weekend better then ever. We are adding hikes and programs to the usual fun and food that comes standard at Meany Lodge. When we get commitments from the volunteers, we will post a schedule of events.
We added the following pages to the web site to help answer your questions. What you need to know has all the information that you need to know before you leave home. This page has additional links to the summer driving directions and frequently asked questions pages.
