Meany Lodge Family Hiking Weekend 2008

Addy leads us back to the trailhead on Sunday

Thank you to all the families, large and small who participated in Meany Lodge's Family Hiking Weekend. We enjoyed hosting all of you this year. Thank you Ray Hecox and Deborah Cole for preparing the wonderful food. Thank you Patti Polinsky and Ray Nelson for organizing and leading the hikes. A big thank you to Mark Abrams for coming at the last minute (twice) to lead hikes when we needed him.

Thank you to David Agee from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for bringing Operation Lifesaver to Meany Lodge. With our at-grade rail crossing, safety and awareness is important at Meany. Let's all look and listen to live around rail crossings. And David, thanks for answering the kids questions even when they strayed from the safety message. Kids love trains.

Special thanks to Michael and Doreen Johnston for bringing their sled dogs again this year. Everyone enjoyed the wonderful demonstration. The Johnston's were very disappointed to have to leave early, and want to thank everyone who helped them pack up during their emergency. Also, thank you Debra and Patti for your animal first aid! I'm sure I speak for the entire Hiking Weekend crowd that I'm just happy to hear Harriman is going to be okay.

I posted my weekend pictures to the the picture page of the hiking weekend web site. If you have pictures to share, you can send them to me.

Be sure to keep checking the Breaking News page on the Family Hiking Weekend web site for more pictures, Meany Lodge updates and information about similar events.

If you have ideas for hiking weekend, please send them to me. I have already heard from my son that the older kids want activities geared more towards them (I saw the older kids decorating cookies). I will work with Sojin to develop something special for the 11 to 14 crowd for next year. Oh . . . and you older kids, I heard this as MORE CHALLENGING HIKES.

I talked to many of you about my friend hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. I talked with Tailwinds on Monday. She is headed to Ashland, OR, skipping around forest fires burning in northern California to start hiking Oregon and Washington. You can read about her journey and follow her all the way to Canada on her on-line trail journal. You can learn more about the Pacific Crest Trail from the Pacific Crest trail Asociation.

Meany is open many weekends this fall for work parties. The cost for lodging and that great Meany food is your time and a little labor. Check the Meany Lodge home page or contact Chuck Welter for more information.

Ski season starts the week after Christmas and runs into March. The lodge is open every weekend, Friday through Sunday. Ski and snowboard lessons are available for adults and children as multi-week programs or single, drop-in lessons. See the Winter Sports website for program details.

Family Hiking Weekend 2009 is the first weekend of August (August 1 & 2, 2009). Please put it on your calendar. We hope to see you next year, if not sooner.

Cheers!

Brian, Jennifer and Sojin
